What is a Floating Rate Plan?
A Floating Rate Plan follows the market price of electricity or natural gas, meaning your rates can go up or down month-to-month. Previously known as our Variable Rate Plan, this flexible option lets you take advantage of market dips while giving you the freedom to switch plans anytime.
How often can my floating rate change?
Your floating rate is tied to the current wholesale energy market price which changes monthly. That means your bill could look different each month, depending on how the market fluctuates.
How do you calculate floating rates?
We calculate floating rates using:
- The Alberta market price during the hours you used energy
- A small service fee per kWh or GJ
- Your total energy use for the billing period
Your floating rate changes each month because it’s based on market prices and your energy usage patterns.
Imagine you used 600 kWh of electricity this month. Your usage happened during hours priced at:
40% at 3¢/kWh
40% at 5¢/kWh
20% at 8¢/kWh
1) Weighted average market price
(3¢ × 40%) + (5¢ × 40%) + (8¢ × 20%) = 4.8¢/kWh
2) Add service fee
4.8¢ + 1.50¢ = 6.3¢/kWh
3) Multiply by usage
600 kWh × 6.3¢ = $37.80
Why is my floating rate different from someone else’s?
Even if two homes use the same amount of energy, their floating rates can differ because they use energy at different times of day.
If you use more energy during higher‑priced hours and someone else uses more during low‑priced hours, your floating rates won’t match.
Why doesn’t my floating rate match the rate I saw when I signed up?
The rate shown during signup is last month’s average market rate. Your actual floating rate is calculated using the hourly market prices during your own usage hours, plus a service fee.
Because everyone’s usage timing is different, personal floating rates rarely match the posted monthly average exactly.
How does ATCO Energy calculate the floating (variable) rate?
We base our floating rate on the current wholesale energy market price, plus a small administration fee. This is a transparent and fair way to pass along the actual cost of energy to you, without hidden charges.
How can I protect myself from high floating rates during winter or summer?
You can switch to a fixed rate plan during peak demand seasons, like mid-winter or summer, to lock in stability.
How do I know if a Floating Rate Plan is right for me?
A Floating Rate Plan is great if you want flexibility and the chance to save when market prices drop. If you prefer predictable, guaranteed pricing, a Fixed Rate Plan might be a better fit.
