So, you’ve picked out your new digs… congrats! Between packing boxes and forwarding your mail, there’s one detail that can make or break moving day: making sure your electricity and natural gas are ready when you arrive.
Here’s a step-by-step guide to moving your energy plan to a new home.

Step 1: Confirm your moving details
Before contacting your energy provider, take five minutes to gather the information you’ll need. It saves time and prevents back-and-forth later.
- Your move-out date
- Your move-in date
- Your new address
- Whether there’s a gap between homes
Pro tip: Moving dates don’t always line up neatly. If there’s time between leaving your current home and moving into your new one, ATCO Energy customers can pause their agreement for up to 90 days and reactivate once move-in is confirmed.
That flexibility protects your current rates and reduces stress during a busy transition.
Step 2: Check the status of your new home
If the home has been sitting empty, newly built, or recently renovated, it might not be fully connected to power or heat yet. That doesn’t mean anything is wrong. It just means a little extra coordination may be required.
Before you submit a request to move your energy plan, check:
- Has someone been living there recently?
- Are the lights currently on?
- Is the heat working?
If the property isn’t energized, a request to turn on your services will need to be submitted. Your local distributor may also charge a connection fee, and activation can take a few extra days.
Step 3: Review your options
Moving naturally changes how you use energy. A larger home may mean different usage. A smaller one may reduce consumption. It’s also a good opportunity to think about how you prefer to manage your bills.
With ATCO Energy, you can:
- Choose electricity, natural gas, or both
- Explore fixed or floating rate plans
- Offset 25% or 100% of your electricity with renewable sources
- Access and download your bills online anytime
Step 4: Submit your move request
Ready to make the move? Processes may differ provider to provider, but here is how it’s done at ATCO Energy:
New to ATCO Energy?
If you’re moving to Alberta or switching providers as part of your move, getting started is simple:
- Compare available electricity and natural gas plans
- Choose what fits your home and budget
- Schedule activation for your move-in date
As a general rule, submit your request at least 5 business days before your move, especially during Alberta’s busy spring and summer moving season.
Already with ATCO Energy?
If you’re moving within Alberta and already an ATCO Energy customer, you won’t need to cancel and start over.
In many cases, you can simply transfer your existing electricity and natural gas plan to your new address, including your current rates. Here’s how:
- Log into My Account
- Complete the Move Assistance form
- Enter your move-out and move-in dates
- Provide your new address
It’s that easy! We coordinate the transition so your service ends at your old home and begins at your new one seamlessly.

Make moving day easier
Moving is rarely simple. But transferring your energy plan should be. With a little planning, you can walk into your new home knowing everything works, and that’s one less thing to worry about on a busy day.
